What happens when IBM meets Social Entrepreneurship meets Reality TV? We’re about to find out! On April 26th, 2015, the first episode of an IBM original web series called “A New Way to Startup” will be released here.
What’s this all about?
Ten social entrepreneurs were picked to pitch their startups at SXSW last month and now five of them are moving forward and moving in together for a week in Austin, TX to participate in a series of daily challenges using IBM technology like Watson Analytics and IBM Verse.
Who are the social entrepreneurs?
The entrepreneurs include:
Aaron Horowitz from Sproutel, who is building the “Sesame Street of healthcare.” Horowitz was inspired by his experience dealing with a terminal illness as a child to create a new way of teaching kids about chronic illnesses like Type 1 diabetes;
John Guydon from LassyProject, whose mission is to find lost children faster by giving parents the ability to notify a community about a missing child within seconds;
Jordan from Owlet, who created a baby monitor in the form of a sock that infants wear to protect their heartrate and oxygen levels;
Lauren Foster, from Stretch Recipes, whose mission is to help people eat better and save more money through “an app that lets you choose your budget, pick your meals and automatically get coupons;”
Stephen Garten, from Charity Charge, who created a credit card rewards website that’s partnering with banks to help cardholders contribute their points to their charity of choice.

Insight Robotics wins SmartCamp 2014! Congrats to Insight Robotics for winning what was one of the most competitive SmartCamps ever! Very impressive!
The difference for Insight Robotics is that they had proven technology that was very innovative with a great social impact: fighting fires.
Using thermal imaging sensors and advanced artificial intelligence vision technology, Insight Robotics’ solution allows fire fighters to locate a forest fire quickly, giving them a jump at extinguishing the flames. So precise is their solution that it can spot fires as small as an area of 2m x 1m within 5km radius!

As we prepare for the upcoming IBM SmartCamp Global Finals, we’ll be showcasing each of the finalists (in no particular order) leading up to the event itself. If you’ve been following our blog, you know that each finalist has had to compete on a local, and then regional, level to make the final cut. The competition has been fierce, and it only gets more intense from here!
This year’s SmartCamp Global Finals is part of the InterConnect 2015 conference in Las Vegas. The Global Finals will be held on Monday, Feb. 23rd from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino. Be sure to register to attend!
For now, let’s take a closer look at our first finalist: Rosie.
Based out of Ithaca, New York, Rosie makes it possible for small and medium-sized brick-and-mortar stores to offer a robust online shopping experience for their customers. They collect data on a shopper’s buying habits and then translate that into an enhanced online shopping experience. Their platform brings together the whole retail supply chain to deliver exceptional customer experience. Last month, IBM announced the launch of the Global Entrepreneur Program for Cloud Startups. Building your business on IBM Cloud is all about keeping your costs down and improving your time to market. There are two BIG reasons why you want to build your business on IBM Cloud: SoftLayer and Bluemix.
–SoftLayer is IBM’s cloud platform. It’s different from its cloud competitors in that it automates and provisions at the data center level rather than the hypervisor level. That means that many cloud platforms could actually be built on SoftLayer, but SoftLayer could not be built on other platforms. –Bluemixis IBM’s developer ecosystem and PaaS. It allows developers to build and deploy applications rapidly and then easily manage and update them. Bluemix also provides the necessary tools for development like middleware and application infrastructure. And it all runs on SoftLayer!
Members of the Global Entrepreneur Program for Cloud Startups will receive more than just cloud credits to access IBM Cloud. They will also receive technical and business support, as well as exposure to potential new clients.

Clip Clip provides card acceptance services for any person or business, regardless of the size of operation and takes all major credit and debit cards. Clip accepts card transactions through a sleek and easy-to-use piece of hardware that connects with an operator’s smartphone or tablet by fitting into the headphone jack of the device. Payments are automatically transferred into the merchant’s bank account every two business days with no monthly fee or minimum transaction amount required. Clip is only one of two companies in the world to have its own proprietary design for the card reader (the other is Square) and it uses a patented fraud protection program. Clip also provides its services through an SDK for developers.
StoreLevel StoreLevel provides consumer brands with real time in-store execution monitoring nationwide on-demand using crowdsourcing and mobile technology. Users download the App and execute missions based on the brands’ needs in exchange for cash rewards; hence providing supplemental income to tens of thousands of families. Earlier this month, SmartCamp London kicked off at Level 39. Similar to last year, the excitement and buzz in the room was evident to all who attended. The quality and expertise of each finalists was extremely solid and represented a wide swath of entrepreneurial endeavors in the UK.
For example, the winner of this year’s SmartCamp London, Andiamo, has a solution that literally can improve the lives of thousands of people. Their 3D orthotics printing offers speed and efficicency not found in the orthotics industry today. Add to that their solution offers children’s orthotics at a much cheaper price than traditional orthotic options, now it is evident how their solution creates Smarter Healthcare and improves the quality of life for so many.
The People’s Choice Award at SmartCamp London goes to SalesGossip. Here is a startup dedicated to improving the retail experience with a solution that aggregates fashion and beauty promotions for online and brick-and-mortar sales, helping to drive traffic and sales to fashion and beauty retailers. Clearly a crowd favorite at the event!
